Secrétaire à Abattant
This beautiful writing desk, veneered on oak with tulipwood, purple wood and other woods, captures the Louis XVI style, with its popular use of Sèvres porcelain plaques. Hillman pioneered the making of miniature porcelain inserts, such as those seen here. Made from a piece in the Wallis Collection in London attributed to Martin Carlin.
Commode d'Appui
This cupboard is made from oak veneered with ebony and with lacquer panels. The vase and flowers reflect the Japanese influence on late 18th century French design. Made by Adam Weisweiler it is an example of Louis XVI classical style. The original is in the Musee Nissim de Camondo, Paris.
Commode by Cressent
This chest of drawers exemplifies early Louis XV, or Regency, design. Its asymmetrical lines and curved legs show the beginnings of what would come to typify Louis XV style.
